Sea fishing on Soroya Island
Fishing on Soroya is well known among anglers. In general, the fishing year is usually divided into different seasons where fishing is focused on different types of fish.
Season
The fishing season begins in mid-February with the fishing for skrei cod, which migrates to the Norwegian coast from the Barents Sea.
The sea around Soroy is one of the absolute best places where even world record fish are caught. Most of the fishing takes place relatively close to land (5-20km from the campsite) and usually the fish are really very big.
The season for skrei (cod) runs from mid-February to the end of April. In bad weather, flounder fishing is often possible close to land, as is fishing for large halibut outside the harbour. During skrei fishing, there are often many dolphins, humpback whales and whales around the fishing grounds, which is another fishing experience.
Spring/summer fishing:
From mid-April to August there is varied fishing with more focus on halibut but still good cod fishing with a chance of some really big cod. In good weather, long trips are usually organized to, among others, the legendary Storskalltaren, Rosa and Kamöysundet.
In the deep banks around Soroya it is possible to get fish between 7-10kg which is a fantastic size so close to land. It’s also a good time for cod, wolffish, brosme, haddock, flounder, etc.
Autumn:
In autumn, the greatest attention is paid to halibut, which moves into shallower water when the temperature drops. Spinning fishing with jigs between 100-150 grams is very popular and effective.
To bet on big fish, many people choose lures with natural bait, often whole cod.
October is the month when the most 150 cm + halibut are caught.
Flounder tend to be really heavy and packed during September/October, this is definitely an underrated sportfish that requires finesse to be tricked into cutting and putting up a good fight.
Cod fishing can be fantastic in autumn and some of the shallow waters usually produce very large fish over 20kg for those hungry for combination fishing.
