Overview

An ideal place for rides on trophy fish!

The camp is located in the middle of nature at the Limfjord, a system of straits in the north of Denmark, which is connected to the North Sea, but at the same time is only four kilometers to the center of Skive and the pedestrian zone.

There is a lot of water around the Skive Fjord campsite – and therefore a lot of good fishing spots! Within a few kilometers you will find Skive Å, which is the estuary of the river Karup Ås in the Limfjord. The river Karup Å is one of the world’s best streams for trout fishing, and if you are more into salmon, you can take a trip to the Skjern Å nature reserve, which is one of the best salmon fishing places in the world. A few meters from the campsite is a great place for wading right in the Limfjord, which offers lots of beautiful sea trout and garfish in spring.

Sea trout in the Limfjord

The fjord is undoubtedly the most popular place for fishing for sea trout, but also the already mentioned garfish and herring. You can fish both in the fjord next to the campsite or after a few minutes drive to reach many other coastal places where you can fish. If you are interested, we will recommend an interactive map that will show you which fishing spots in the Limfjord are the best right now. The map takes into account wind, weather, temperature and water level.

Fish species in the Limfjord

– Limfjord sea trout is a popular sport fish, but other fish can be caught in the Limfjord. Here is a selection of the most popular sport fish that you can most likely catch in the Limfjord.

Types for fishing from the shore in the Limfjord

Revlekyster in the Limfjord

– Many shores of the Limfjord are so-called cliff shores, where deeper dark areas are interrupted by longitudinal shallow cliffs.

The bottom is mostly sandy, but the monotony is often broken by larger rocks, gravel-bottomed areas and underwater vegetation. The deeper areas between the cliffs can hold a lot of sea trout. At low tide, fish are often located inside the innermost dark belt, which can be fished from shore, while at low tide it may be necessary to wade to the 1st or 2nd reef.

Attention; can be dangerous to wade away!

Strong currents in the Limfjord

– There are many coastal places in the Limfjord with strong currents. Both in the narrow Langerak in the east and in the central and western part of the fjord. At the mouth of the fjord in the Kattegat, there are several incredibly exciting tidal canals that can offer very special fishing.

Many of the places with strong currents are deep, and these two factors make these places good places in the summer months, because that often means colder, oxygen-rich water. Fish often remain at the transition between shallow water and a deep stream, where they can hunt for food and find shelter from the current.

We recommend heavier baits to get deep even in strong currents. Fishermen often use baits from 21 to 24 grams here. If you are fly fishing fishermen here, you will need to use a diving line.

Stone and shell cliffs in the Limfjord

– Reefs are available in all sizes, but whether large or small, there are good fishing opportunities.

The cliffs are characterized by the fact that they are shallow in relation to the adjacent areas. Fish are often caught over a reef or when crossing between a reef and slightly deeper water. In particular, reefs associated with seaweed strips attract and hold many fish in deeper water.

Pay attention to the water level on the cliffs.
In general, fishing in the Limfjord is best at medium to high levels, and reefs are no exception. At high tide, most cliffs can be caught from the shore. At low tide, some reefs dry out or the water level is so low that the fish can’t stay there. If you are fishing in low tide areas, you may need to get closer to the fish.

Ålegræskyster – grasslands in the Limfjord

– This coastal type is very widespread in the Limfjord and at first glance many will probably think that the place is monotonous and boring. What the coastal type may lack in magic is again richly balanced by the number of fish.

Ålegræskyster plates are home to sea trout prey.
Sea trout therefore often fish on or near this particular type of coast. It is best to fish on the edges of grass meadows or where there are holes in the vegetation.

There are days when fishing on this type of coast is virtually impossible due to torn leaves floating on the water surface. This problem is greatest with strong winds on land. At low tide in the fjord, it will be necessary to wade into deeper water in many places.

Ports and piers in the Limfjord

– Artificial rock cliffs in harbors and piers are home to many sea trout prey, which is why fish are often caught here.

In addition to sea trout, it is often possible to catch herring, garfish, plaice, etc. from the pier. The ports are also always easily accessible and regardless of the wind direction, you can almost always fish here, because the water is deep and the piers create a great shelter.

Harbors and piers are also ideal for children.
Thanks to the deep water, the harbors and piers are suitable for children and beginners in fishing, because you do not have to wade to get to the fish. Vegetation on stone formations of piers often attracts mullets, and then it may be good to have a fly rod or bread and hook.

From most ports it is also possible to place a boat in the water, which of course offers completely different possibilities for finding fish.

If you are interested, we will send you the rules for fishing in the Limfjord and on the rivers. Recommendations for what to take with you and how to prepare for fishing in Denmark in general.

River Karup Å

A stone’s throw from Skive Fjord Campsite is the mouth of the Karup Ås River. Karup Å is known as one of the world’s best fishing waters for trout fishing – large trout! The river flows through a beautiful river valley and meanders in the town of Skive, then flows into the Skive Fjord. Skive Fjord is part of the Limfjord and as you can probably imagine, in Skive Fjord is a lot of fish thanks to the river. Sea trout swim up into the river to reproduce, and therefore the estuary abounds in fish both on the way in and out of the river, but also in Karup Å itself.

Lakes

There are many exciting lakes within an hour’s drive of the campsite. Here you can catch fish such as rainbow trout, brook trout and sea trout. Several lakes are equipped with toilets, tables, filleting areas, vending machines with hot drinks, …

There are also plenty of local guides who like to share tips and tricks, secret places and everything you need to know to get the most out of your fishing holiday.
