Rancho Rio Ebro – this is unforgettable fishing in Spain

The Rancho Rio Ebro campsite is located approximately 8 km from the picturesque Spanish town of Mequinenza and its perfect location makes it an ideal base camp for fishing for catfish and other fish on the Ebro River. Every year, hundreds of foreign fishermen head here to try their luck at catching trophy monsters at the Riba Roja and Mequinenza dams.

Surroundings

The surroundings of the Rancho Rio Ebro campsite are also very attractive from the point of view of natural beauty. Even the sea with its beautiful coastline is within driving distance.

Fishing

A pleasant environment with a family atmosphere is a great place for a holiday enriched by trophy fishing.

The reason why thousands of the catch of greedy fishermen go here every year is simple – there are only a few places such a concentration of giant catfish, zander and other fish. The only real exception is the Ebro river and the dams located on it.

Black bass

The black bass here have not grown to the size known from the American competitions, but at a weight of around 3 kg and a length of 60 cm, a fight with it is an unforgettable experience – thanks to year-round protection, its population in the middle dam is really numerous.

It reaches its highest activity during the warmest months of May – September

 

Zander

Probably the most fish caught on the Ebro, despite the fact that the Ebro river is mainly famous for catfish fishing. Regardless of the attractiveness of this location for catfish fishing, it is true that far more zander are caught here.

During the spawning season, in the months of March and April, fishing is done with a classic spinning rod with artificial lures, and thousands of people are on the water every day – at this time, it is not a problem to catch several dozen zander with a length of 40-90 cm per day.

  • Spinner with artificial lures

On the upper dam, thanks to the huge depths, it is practically only usable during the spawning season, outside of this period either fishing with heavy or vertical spinning with artificial or natural lures is used.

At the lower dam, due to the smaller average depth, spinning is possible almost all year round – thanks to the large number of flooded trees, this is a challenging but effective way of catching this fish.

*Shorter 1.6-2.1m long rods are ideal for spinning (classic spinning rods with a length of 2.4-2.7m are too heavy and you won’t want to see them after a week of fishing), with a casting load of about 30g – such a model can be used on a vertical with a fish. A necessary accessory is a braided line with a diameter of 0.06-0.12 mm. You will appreciate its properties especially when fishing in the depths – at a depth of 30 m, the catch is hardly noticeable when fishing with a classic fishing line.

Carps

The fish usually reach a length of more than 1 m and a weight of over 20 kg.

Monsters over 30kg are reported in several cases every year.

They catch on classic carp rigs and equipment, the basis is to feed the carp – just by feeding at least 10 kg per rod per day, you can get over the magical 20 kg limit. It may seem excessive, but the amount of carp from 6 to 15 kg is such that they will eat practically everything.

The most used are the usual Halibut pellets – don’t bring them with you – buy them on site – corn and frolig dog food. Boilie is practically ineffective.

Carp fishing equipment

Classic carp rods 3.6-3.9m with a weight of 2.75-3.5lb are ideal, a line of at least 0.30mm, the optimum is 0.35mm – when you hook up a submarine with a 30cm wide tail fin, you will understand that it is not excessive at all .

Iit’s a good idea to use a shock rod with some more durable material or a line with a lead core – otherwise you’ll lose more than half the fish.

A necessary accessory is, of course, a carp landing net, at least with meter arms.

Night fishing is ideal in the summer months, when carp eat literally on the fly, in the winter months, at the end and beginning of the year, fewer but bigger fish are caught.

 

Catfish fishing

The Ebro is probably the best location to fish for capital catfish, you can probably catch bigger pieces elsewhere, but in terms of the number of catches over 2m long the Ebro river is the clear number one.

Most of the fish caught are returned to the water, and even if there is really a lot of fishing pressure, the number or size of fish caught is not lower.

Catches of around 180cm are quite common and thanks to widespread pellet fishing it is no problem to catch a fish of this size weighing around 50kg.

The weight gains here are really incredible, even fish over 2 m can add 10 kg in weight per year with an excess of food. If you focus on catfish, a fish over 2 m is almost certain – the current documented record is approx. 112 kg – a photo of this fish can be found in almost every shop and restaurant in Mequinenza today.

The upper weight category of average pieces rises practically every year.

On the River Ebro, catfish can be caught using several common and less well-known methods

We will leave the choice of method for catfish fishing up to you, but if you are not sure, we will be happy to help you not only with preparation and equipment, but also with the hunt itself.

  • Spinning
  • Catfish fishing for pellets

Currently the most used and practically the simplest method of fishing. Due to legislative changes, it is almost impossible to catch bait fish and although everyone is catching them, pellets are an extremely popular technique. The fishing system is identical to carp fishing – you just use bigger hooks, lead and stronger lines.

Equipment – Catfish rods approx. 3m with a casting load of 300-500g, lead weighing 300-600g (depending on the distance and strength of the current), single hooks 3/0-5/0, lines with a load capacity of 60kg or more. It is fished with the brake applied and the rod positioned vertically in the catfish fork. If you can feed the catfish – in some places this fish stays in huge schools and it is not a problem to catch several dozen pieces a day to keep at your place. Pellet fishing has its specifics and works in some places of dams – Ebro (Chiprany area), river Segre, Cinca and Mataraňa with a depth of up to 15m at water temperatures from 20°C.
