Overview

The land of ice and fire will never cease to surprise you, changing its face with every visit due to the omnipresent volcanic activity. These unique conditions will provide you with an experience of a lifetime. Head to the east of Iceland, towards the mouth of the river, where trophy catches of salmon, trout, and even sea char are taken care of. However, operators continuously monitor the growing salmon populations, which are the primary catch.

If interested, it is possible to prepare a package according to your specific requirements.

The fishing season begins from June 25th to September 30th for salmon, although trout can be caught throughout the summer.

Between the rivers Jökla and Kaldá, where the cabin is located, you can venture to two fishing spots where the necessary licenses are required, and we’ll be happy to assist you with that.

  • The permit price is 200 – 600 USD

The upper part of the Jökla River

The river has proven to be one of the best for salmon fishing in the country, thanks to its clean water flowing from the glacier. Since the construction of the dam in 2006, the local community has consistently taken care of stocking new salmon into all the river’s tributaries, allowing you to enjoy fly fishing in unforgettable locations.

There are many pools on the Jökla River, with a focus on the canyon section above the bridge carrying Highway 1 across the river and downstream from there. At the top of this section, the river, only a few meters wide at this point, disappears into a crack in the rock and reappears in a bubbling cauldron about 30 meters downstream. However, a fish ladder has now been built, ensuring a stable fish migration into the upper Jökla, and since 2013, it has become possible to offer fishing for both salmon and Arctic char. Many pools have never been fished, so you may be the first to explore places where no one has been before!

  • Season: July 1st to September 30th for salmon.
  • All fishing programs start on the first day of arrival in the afternoon and end at 12:00 on the last day.
  • Favorite flies: Red Frances, Frances Black, Frigg, Sunray Shadow, Black and Blue, Cascade.
  • Price: from USD 900/person – price includes fishing license, accommodation, breakfast and a guide for groups of 2-3 fishermen who will provide transportation to fishing destinations
  • For groups, individual pricing can be arranged.
  • During the expedition, you also have the opportunity to try goose hunting: From August 20th, goose shooting can be included in the Jökla package, and we have several excellent shooting areas nearby.

The lower part of the Jökla River and its tributaries

Even in the last 50 km of the Jökla River, you’ll find plenty of excitement. You can explore several tributaries according to your preferences.

Kalda contains a longer and larger tributary to the Jökla river and longer pools than the other tributaries. The last of the tributaries, Fögruhlíðará, has the character of a meadow stream and flows calmly through pastures. Most salmon are found in the upper half of the Fögruhlíðará river. The season on these tributaries ends at the beginning of August.

  • Season: June 1st to August 20th
  • Fishing Hours – Fishing is from 07:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 21:00. Times are flexible for the mouth of Fögruhlíðará depending on the tide.
