Overview

The fishing camp focuses on coho (silver salmon) fishing on the Alaskan Egegik River.

The Egegik River is touted by many experienced anglers as the best silver salmon stream in all of Alaska. Lodge on the Egegik River was the first fishing lodge to become established on the breathtaking Egegik River, and is less than a 5 minute boat ride from some of the best fishing holes on the entire river.

The gently flowing river Egegik is wide and shallow along the coast, which allows for very easy walking. Regardless of your age or level of fishing experience. On good days, experienced fishermen can catch over 75 coho what a day. You can keep five what a day.

If you want to experience fishing in Alaska in more distant streams, hop on a float plane for one day. Here you have access to dozens of the most remote streams in all of Alaska, where you can catch various species of salmon, large arctic char, rainbow trout and other fish in addition to powerful Alaskan brown bears.

Many fishermen go fishing with the locals because they want to learn different salmon fishing techniques. Standing in one spot, it’s common to catch silver salmon by way of drift-fishing eggs, casting lures, floating a bobber and jig, twitching jigs, casting plugs, stripping flies and drifting surface poppers with a fly rod.

Remember, in all of Alaska’s streams it’s required that wading boots have rubber soles–no felt soles.

Season: August + September

About the camp

The chef has been cooking here for many years and you can count on great food and days of fishing.

Internet service is extremely limited, sometimes not available at all. We do not have cell phone coverage in the camp, but in case of emergency we have a camp satellite phone.

The camp is diligently trying to function in an environmentally positive way, which means off the grid. We produce the camp’s power from solar panels and wind generators with a battery storage system.

Customers will experience true Alaska at an affordable price without being disturbed by constant access from the outside world, which can hinder the unique feeling of what makes this place so special.

Your time with us at Lodge on Alaska’s Egegik River is designed to accommodate 5 days of salmon fishing and 5 nights stay, but some planning on your part is essential in helping make this happen.

The typical day begins with breakfast around 6:30. By 7:00 A.M. we’re hitting the river fishing for coho. Lunch is around noon, and most of the time it’s a shore lunch prepared by our cook. After lunch, continue fishing for silver salmon, often going to a different place from where you spent the morning. Some veteran anglers like taking a sack lunch with them after breakfast, hiking the river on their own, fishing all day, returning to camp by 6:00 P.M. At the Lodge On The Egegik River we’re all about catering to your personal needs.

Packing List for Fishing

Clothing:

Temperatures are mild during our brief fishing season, ranging from the upper 30ºs at night to over 80º on some days. Temperatures are normally in the 45º-70º range. Heavy, duck hunting style rain jackets are not necessary. We recommend Cabela’s Guidewear, or something similar. Pack light, you’d be surprised how little you really need.

  • 1 pair pants for fishing in.
  • 1 pair light pants for wearing at the lodge.
  • 1 warm shirt (fleece or wool).
  • 2 lightweight shirts for wearing at the lodge.
  • 2 pair warm socks.
  • 2 pair of liner socks.
  • Breathable chest waders like Cabela’s Dry-Plus (hip waders are okay).
  • Gloves
  • Rain coat and pants (make sure they’re not too bulky).
  • 1 set long underwear.
  • 1 pair camp shoes.
  • 1 warm, fleece coat with wind stopper.
  • 1 fleece or down vest (optional)
  • 1 mosquito head net.

Personal Items:

  • Water bottle
  • First aide items
  • Bug Repellent (we’ll have some)
  • Any medications you may need (over the counter, prescription)
  • Camera
  • Small flashlight

We supply all fishing rods and reels, both spinning and fly rods. Our spinning rods are a range of G. Loomis E6X models, paired with the latest Shimano spinning reels. Our fly rods are top of the line G. Loomis IMX-PRO series with Cabela’s Prestige III reels.

MISCELLANEOUS:

  • Camera and batteries
  • Small flashlight
  • *1 spinning fishing rod – 4 lb. to 8 lb.
  • *1 casting fishing rod (medium/heavy) – 8 lb. to 15 lb.
  • Assorted lures – 1/2 oz. to 1 oz. bright colored (orange, pink, & red) pixies and Mepps type spinners and spoons
  • Fly Fishermen: 2 – 6 lb. to 8lb. rods
  • 1 Roll of Duct tape

Recommended Gear for Fly Fishing

SILVER FLYFISHING:

  • Rods: 8 to 9 wt. traditional or switch, something that you can throw big flies and heavy lines with in the wind.
  • Lines: Floating or sinking tips. Topwater opportunities do present themselves, but most fish will be caught sub-surface so getting down is nice but floating line with sinking leader works just fine.
  • Flies: Articulated leaches and streamers in pink, purple, chartreuse, blue, black. Sizes 1/0 to 4. Have a handful of topwater flies and poppers for when the conditions are ideal.
  • Tippet of straight 10 to 12 lb. is ideal.

CHAR/GRAYLING FLYFISHING:

  • Rods: 6-wt. minimum, for the wind and keeping 10 lb.-plus char out of overhanging alders and fallen trees.
  • Lines: Mostly floating, intermediate sinking is not a bad idea if you’re brining two.
  • Flies: Small streamers (size 4 to 8, variety of colors) or egg patterns, leeches.

Beads are hard to beat when the salmon are spawning.

BEAD KIT:

  • Toothpicks (make sure they fit your beads).
  • Beads
  • Split shot
  • Indicators
  • Egg hooks (Gamakatsu egg hook size 10 is tough enough to land a sliver but small enough for a grayling).
  • BnR Tackle Soft Beads (and T-Stops) 20mm, 32mm in pink, pink combinations, cerise, orange.

OTHER NOTES:

We will fillet, vacuum pack & freeze all fish for the trip home. Waxed boxes or freezer tote bags are provided. If you want to bring a cooler, limit the size to under 50 quarts.
